The Difference Between High Fantasy and Fantasy

I'm a big fantasy lover, and I can't help noticing when people tag things as #fantasy, and they are high fantasy. Obviously, it's still fantasy, so do tag that. But tag #highfantasy as well.
And one more thing, high fantasy is a sub-genre of regular fantasy. It's still fantasy, guys.
Sooooo...
I'm going to start by giving an example of regular fantasy; Twilight. Though more of a romance, Twilight is indeed fantasy. I mean, vampires don't really exist. Another example is The Mortal Instruments. They are amazing and have a lot more fantasy aspects than Twilight, but they aren't high fantasy. Neither is Harry Potter, Percy Jackson or Hush Hush.
A few key points of fantasy, though not always true, fantasy often has;


  1. Set in this world, but is hidden from normal people
  2. Has species such as wizards, vampires, werewolves and shapeshifters
  3. Has an ordinary person (or are they) finding out about this world behind the normal one

High fantasy is nearly always set in a different world. A classic example of high fantasy? Lord of The Rings. Different world, but not dystopian, no dystopian is the future.
Another example of high fantasy? Throne of Glass, Red Queen, Strange the Dreamer.
A few key points in high fantasy. This isn't always true, but it is often.

  1. Set in a different world
  2. Has strange species, such as elves, fae, gods
  3. This world normally has royalty, or sometimes and sometimes don't play a big part.
  4. Some characters have magical powers, like an element etc
I hope that quick reminder of the differences between regular fantasy and high fantasy. Don't forget, high fantasy is a sub-genre of regular fantasy.

February prompt - RED                                                RED The first thing that comes to mind at the word red is blood. I guess that has to do with one of my favourite books RED QUEEN.
